Master Gardener Program Helping the Community Grow
Master Gardeners are community volunteers trained to assist the Blair County Cooperative Extension Office in answering home horticultural related inquiries and providing hands-on training through demonstrations for home gardeners, clubs and organizations.
What Kind of Training do Master Gardeners receive? Master Gardeners receive a minimum of 30 hours of instruction from county extension educators and Pennsylvania State University Instructors. After completing the course work, each new Master Gardener must provide 50 hours of volunteer service to the community. After successful completion of these requirements the Master Gardener is awarded a Penn State Master Gardener certificate. Master Gardeners continue their learning experiences by participating in at least eight hours of training and 20 hours of volunteer service each year. Master Gardeners have
a strong interest in gardening, a willingness to learn, and, most important,
the desire to help others. Certified Master Gardeners have had training
in plant science, integrated pest
management, pesticide safety, plant propagation, soil science, plant
disease and insect pests. Many Master Gardeners focus on a particular
subject area of interest such as vegetable gardening, landscape design,
or water gardening.
